Kodak D-76 is the classic B&W film developer.  This package makes 3.8L or 1 Gallon for US.  Yields full emulsion speed and good shadow detail with normal contrast and moderately fine grain. It gives excellent development latitude and is good for push or pull processing.  It comes in a convenient powder.  Just add hot water and you will be good to go.
